Not sure your figures are correct; I read an article about revenue from YT ads a few months ago and it's not as lucrative as that. The "Charlie Bit My Finger" vid generated over four hundred million hits and made something like $150k. It also depends on how the channel was monetized and what ads are displayed. That said, that is a popular channel and the video probably will make some cash above and beyond the thousand bucks given away. There's a YT calculator that gives a general idea...not sure how accurate it is, but it said a million views can make anywhere from $300 - 2500. That video already has over 3.6 million views, so....
I'm not disagreeing with you, though, b/c I had similar thoughts after watching it. (I've grown cynical in my old age) Since the channel is a business, I imagine the donation could be a legitimate business expense. (but I don't know for sure) I don't know the motivation of the guy giving away the money, but I'd like to think altruism was responsible, not how many YT views he can get.
BTW, I have an ad blocker extension on my Firefox browser and I don't see ads on YT or most any other places. I do have it disabled here, though, b/c I have a free membership and the ads aren't overly obtrusive and it would make me the ultimate chintz to block the tiny amt. of money Todd *might* make from me visiting such a great website, using its resources and taking up bandwidth. Most of the rest of 'em can go pound sand, though.

A business that involves giving back to those less fortunate and helping people is a noble business regardless is it not? The return on this man's investment will be priceless... not just for himself, but the impact and ripple effect it will have on everyone who sees it and touched by it. I wonder how many people will be inspired and act upon that inspiration because of a 3 minute video. What a beautiful story.
